Adam White

Founder of Birchfield Solutions. Principal Software Engineer and Azure solution architect.

Background

Adam White founded Birchfield Solutions. He has spent 14+ years in C#/.NET development, architectural design and distributed cloud applications, moving progressively into principal-level engineering, solution architecture and technical leadership. His strength is understanding what a business needs and turning it into technical solutions that are highly available, resilient and cost-effective.

Career

Adam started at M and M Direct as a web content editor, became a junior developer and was promoted to developer within nine months. He went on to lead a team of four developers there, built continuous integration servers, moved the team from SVN to Mercurial and introduced unit testing and dependency injection.

Contract roles followed. At Emo Unlimited he enabled bespoke changes for key clients, including Rolls-Royce, without affecting others on the shared system. At JLT he delivered pension auto-enrolment, removing a manual process equivalent to five full-time roles, and changes that cut outages by 75%. He then built systems for Group HES, Activus and Capita Travel and Events, where he also mentored developers in BDD and TDD, and architected microservices, CQRS and event sourcing for car finance at ALD Automotive (Société Générale).

Later roles centred on Azure architecture. At Landmark he architected a new website for DEFRA and later Ofgem's energy switching framework. For the Office for Students, through Cadence Innova, he delivered a self-service portal that passed three external penetration tests. At Schneider Electric he led a DevOps transformation and designed a new IoT platform for Wiser Home.

He then joined the Microsoft and Met Office climate supercomputer programme, became Application Architect at DMI — leading a team of 10 to turn a high-risk project around and into production, and completing a GitHub Enterprise to GitHub EMU migration with no loss of users or data — and joined the UK Hydrographic Office as Principal Software Engineer and Technical Product Owner, leading 25 people. He returned to Microsoft as Lead Software Engineer, where he established AI-assisted engineering practices, and then worked at Stonewater on platform consolidation and AI-assisted tooling.

Since October 2025 he has also been building Birchfield Solutions' own mobile apps and games. The case studies cover the main engagements in more detail.

AI-assisted engineering

Adam focuses on agentic AI and hyper-velocity engineering: using AI tools to ship reliable software faster, without cutting corners on quality or security. At Microsoft he established practices for accelerated code navigation, test generation and incident triage; at Stonewater he introduced tooling for code review support, troubleshooting and automation helpers.

Security-conscious engineering

Adam has experience delivering SC-cleared programmes. Security is designed in from the start, from validation layers and storage scanning to a public portal that passed external penetration tests.
